Ryan VJ

Role: Co-Founder, Counsellor & Psychotherapist

Ryan oversees the tailored therapeutic plans and interventions within the retreat.

How can you help me?

I know what it’s like to try to control the outer world through endless schedules and to-do lists, to power through, to live on auto-pilot. We learn as we get older. The experiences we go through can determine how we appear to everyone outside. However your past doesn't have to determine your future.

In my practice, I specialise in providing therapy to male and female clients, including young adults and couples. Whilst I specialise in supporting clients with substance misuse, anxiety and depression, bereavement and loss and difficulties surrounding gender and sexuality, I also help with a wide variety of difficulties.  Everything from, terminal illness, low self-esteem, loneliness and isolation and everything in between.

I am committed to helping my clients stop suffering in silence and not only learn how to navigate the complexities of everyday life but find ways to thrive in their experience rather than just survive it.

I want to help you feel less alone.  You deserve to discover your strength and your happiness. It is possible to be fulfilled in your relationships. Together, we will increase your confidence in your ability to successfully manage your life, your relationships and yourself.

And whatever your age, gender, sexual identity or background, it’s my promise that you will always feel welcome here.

Why did you become a therapist?

Ever since I was a child, people have been sharing their stories. I believe that everyone deserves to feel loved, accepted, content, confident, and fulfilled not only in their relationship with others but also with themselves.  And that everyone, no matter their life circumstances, can heal and grow.

Most of all, I believe that anyone has the ability to not just survive in life, but to thrive.

Why did you choose to specialise in these areas?

My own experiences and struggles have deeply impacted me personally and as a therapist.  I have a deep and intimate understanding of the emotions and challenges associated with addiction, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and also with sexuality and identity.  I also know that struggling with these issues can be an isolating experience.  It is important that anyone going through these difficulties have the support needed and I am dedicated to providing this in my practice.

What is your experience?

For many years, I have worked with women, men, adolescents, young adults and couples in a wide range of settings, including: community mental health charities, local cancer charities, private rehab centres and local children's services. I also work alongside Judith Sullivan and Associates in Leicestershire and Clarity Well-Being Clinic, North Warwickshire. Every one of these experiences has shaped me into the therapist I am today. In addition, my personal experiences have deeply impacted the insight I am able to bring to my work and my clients.

As a result, I understand what it feels like to have to overcome really hard things. I know what it feels like to have to manage difficult relationships, deal with loss, navigate major life transitions and cope with the overwhelming sensation of day to day stress.  And I can relate to the pain and frustration that comes with addiction, bereavement and loss, anxiety, depression as well as sexuality and identity difficulties.  It is hard to do these things alone.
